A Brief History and Background on Acupuncture


Acupuncture is the important components of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine). The theory of TCM is based on Huang Di Nei Jing (Huangdi's Canon of Medicines) was published in the Han Dynasty, 2000 years ago.





Why use Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is primarily used to resolve certain physical problems such as swelling, pain, loss of appetite and sleep deprivation, etc. It helps people that suffer from stress, depression, and side effects of drugs including Chemotherapy drug.


A Brief History of Acupuncture in China

In China Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to prevent and treat many diseases.

Missionaries brought western medicine into China in the 19th Century.

Around 1928, the government of the Republic of China promote Western Medicine and turn down Traditional Chinese Medicine, people who follow the traditions still keep practicing Acupuncture and Chinese herbs.

In 1956, the People's Republic of China established four TCM universities which located in Beijing(North), Chengdu(West), Shanghai(East), Guangzhou(South). My alma mater is one of the four universities.


Acupuncture in the U.S.A. and around the World

Acupuncture also has a long history of use throughout the world.

in Korea since the 6th century

into Japan 6th century, through Korea

in Europe since the Middle Ages, by businessmen were doing trade between east and west

in the United States for over 200 years, spread to the U.S. through Europeans


In the United States, in 1971 Acupuncture gained significant interest and respect after James Reston was treated in China with Acupuncture. Reston was a New York Times journalist and while visiting China, he needed an emergency appendectomy. Chinese doctors used acupuncture on him for post- operative pain control, and he had a very quick recovery.


Current use and Advancements in Acupuncture in the U.S.

Since 1997, the National Institutes of Health has recommended that acupuncture be taught in the U.S. medical schools.


The Mayo Clinic and the John Hopkins University Hospital provide Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs in their Comprehensive Department.


Recent advances and scientific studies related to Acupuncture have improved its efficacy. It continues to be used in conjunction with western medicine throughout the world.


Research has shown that over 14 million U.S. citizens used or had tried acupuncture.


The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services determined to provide coverage for acupuncture for low back pain in its population in 2020.
